COMMEZZADURA (TRENTINO - ITALY), 07 JUNE 2012 - More than 15,000 fans, came on Sunday for the World Cup downhill race at Val di Sole. On the Saturday, 7,000 people watched for the 4X Pro Tour (the only Italian stage on the circuit).
"There was a large turnout, both for spectator and athletes. 283 people signed up to tackle the notoriously challenging downhill course and over 250 for the race the 4X Pro Tour race. They represented 33 different countries and four continents." Explain Gianni Ravelli and Rosina, president and vice president of CO for the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup RockyRoads Val di Sole, Trentino-2012. "Downhill is growing as a sport and the numbers this weekend are evidence of that. It was an amazing race this weekend and everyone from the athletes to the timekeepers thanked us for making their lives easier with such a good track."
"We are now waiting for 17 June for the UCI to formalise their 2013 calendar and we hope to run the race here again next year. We are also interested in opening ourselves up to enduro, which we believe represents the future of mountain biking. The goal is to organise another world championships here and we are already starting to think about 2014. The investment would be significant, but we believe we can find it in the near future. What we would like today is for Val di Sole to become more recognised on for freeriding and for fans and families to come and enjoy the area on their mountain bikes."
